List down your personal stories on how you first started learning english in your early days. (parents/friends/teachers/tv/books?)

for me, I started learning english through Sesame Street. Mr. Green

later on, my parents bought me a set of Sesame Street Encyclopedia set (this kick-started my interest in reading, btw), and later when I entered into primary school, they bought me a Charlie Brown Science encyclopedia set.
By this time, I was like a bookworm Shocked , reading books whenever I had the chance, especially books on science since I was damn fascinated with it.

not long after that, my father bought me a junior encyclopedia set, which I also read whenever I had any free time (it's a wonder why I'm still now wearing glasses by now, all other members of my family wears glasses... Cool ). i read the encyclopedias while eating, before going to sleep, and while xxxxxxxx. Mr. Green .

I learned English during my study in UIA coz most references were in English.
Quite headache la.....but at last.... no problem with it... most importantly....be talkative (speak english) to everybody...... then it will make us fluent.....

i started learn english in primary school.. it is a difficult subject and i can say that i think i don't like this subject ... we need to bring dictionary everyday and speak in english during english class.. i still remember our teacher Mrs. Siew Khin Ching (can't remember the spelling), she teach us English since standard 1 to 3, and then Mrs. Manggalam. The most thing that i like in this subject is there is always a quiz and both teacher prepare present for students... that is one of their way to make us like this subject... now i like this subject even there is still a few mistake in grammar, pronounciation, vocabulary and sometimes in spelling..

honestly speaking, i started learning english through reading newspaper, books and television rather than formal learning at my school.

why? becoz even though we learned english at the school, but we didn't practice much. speaking often malay rather than english except in the english class. lol. what a pity malay student (me! *sigh*).

i liked much english when i was in primary but then my interest decrased when i was in 2ndary becos of my boring teacher (how can i blamed on him? Very Happy, but damn true, he's sucks!)

years after years, i practiced more in my university life since it uses english as an intermediate. thanx god, i now realized how important it is when it comes to real life of working.

another thing is that i'm more concerning in grammatical thingy... so watch out.. lol Laughing

How you speak english relies very much in the environment in which you use it. For instance, if you frequently hang out with english speaking chinese (and I mean 'chinglish' Wink), you'll have their accent sticking at your tongue. The same applies to the Malay language, i.e: when you buy VCDs/DVDs at Holiday Plaza - "tak boleh maaa...", "mahal looh..", etc.

If you frequently hang out with native speakers (or at least those who can speak like native speakers), you'll get your 'English' back.
So, don't worry maaaa... Mr. Green

neways,

my interest in english came much from my interest in other things (mainly science). no one urged me to learn english.
since I liked watching Sesame Street and reading (my parents provided some 'encouragement' by preparing ONLY english materials for me, but they were fun nonetheless Razz).
english became second nature to me.

my point is sometimes, childrens don't like being forced into doing what people force them to do. and sometimes, this childish nature is dragged through your childhood, teens, and later into adulthood.

those are my 2 cents...
